I was listening to my wife, who is seriously concerned about the COVID-19 virus and reads almost everything she can get her hands on about it (as someone in every household should be). She mentioned that some people suspect that they may have contracted the virus from their mail and the papers associated with it. So that statement got me thinking… if it can live on mail, then it can live on the paper documents that you and your company are passing back and forth. This concerned me and called me to action.
I did a little digging of my own. Here is a link to an article about how long COVID-19 can live on surfaces https://www.webmd.com/lung/how-long-covid-19-lives-on-surfaces. Here’s an excerpt:
The coronavirus that causes COVID-19 mainly spreads from person to person. When someone who is infected coughs or sneezes, they send droplets containing the virus into the air. A healthy person can then breathe in those droplets. You can also catch the virus if you touch a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touch your mouth, nose, or eyes.
The coronavirus can live for hours to days on surfaces like countertops and doorknobs. How long it survives depends on the material the surface is made from.
Paper
The length of time varies. Some strains of coronavirus live for only a few minutes on paper, while others live for up to 5 days.
There are hundreds of applications available that can handle a lot of the forms currently used in an office environment but there are also a lot that are not. Please ask me direct questions about sources for these paper replacements and I will provide you with some alternatives to paper. There may be some documents that cannot easily be converted but we will help you with this conversion as well.
The purpose of Social Distancing is to “flatten the curve”. To flatten the curve means to “slow the rate of infection for contagious diseases by taking measures like canceling schools, closing businesses, or sheltering in place in hopes of reducing the number of patients who need urgent medical care all at once“. In China, the epidemic went out of their control and lasted for 2+ months before the rate of infection slowed down. Taking this into account, to prevent the virus from spreading, we can control it simply with Social Distancing by staying at home, which for us, may need to be extended for an even longer period until we are able to flatten the curve.
Being at home can save more lives than we know. That is why it is important to have these alternatives that reduce unnecessary contact to surfaces or objects that we use daily that has a high risk of contamination. If you have a form that you want to convert, send me a direct message. For some it may be an application that already exists and for some, we will build it for you and get you going.
